About the River
“Mississippi” literally translated means “great river.” As the chief river of the largest river system in North America, the Mississippi River is one of the country’s most primal systems of connection. It was a central feature and source of life for the Cahokia civilization and later gave rise to our modern city, from its humble beginnings as a fur traders’ post.
As the St. Louis region has grown and changed, so has the role of the Mississippi River system. Today, the Mighty Mississippi continues to quietly sustain our region – providing fresh water for families and farms, an inland water highway for barge traffic, and a tourist attraction for those seeking to experience where westward expansion began.
